Places to go on a ride around Kathmandu

It’s been a year since I got my bike, but I’ve only racked up around 8K km mostly just commuting between home and college. But lately, I’ve been feeling the urge to actually ride and touch some grass, so I’ve been exploring Kathmandu and its surroundings for the past month.

For me, the ride itself is more important than the destination—because, after a while, all places start to feel the same. This is my attempt to share ride-centric destinations, though I can’t guarantee the destinations themselves will be worth it!

1. Jamchen Gumba & Dadagaun

Road-wise, this was one of the most peaceful rides I’ve had. It’s not too far—just take the uphill route from Budhanilkantha Temple, and you’ll reach Jamchen Gumba. The road is quite steep, but the view from the top is incredibly calming.

Dadagaun is on the other side, so you’ll need to ride back down and head toward Shivapuri National Park. This route takes you through a mild forest on a smooth, pitch-black road that feels insanely satisfying to ride on.

2. Namobuddha

I absolutely loved this ride, and the timing couldn’t have been better. It had rained all night before my trip, so when I set out in the morning, Kathmandu was drowning. But the rain had settled the dust, and the air was crisp. The view from Namobuddha was peaceful, with clouds straight out of a Studio Ghibli movie. Everything about this ride was just perfect.

3. Chitlang - Markhu

Okay, this one isn’t here for the ride—it’s all about the destination. The road is steep and completely off-road, so it’s not exactly a fun cruise. But if you’re looking for the perfect spot for a night out with the homies, this is it.

4. Dhap Dam

If you have an off-road bike, you’ll enjoy this. The road is rocky and steep in some sections, making it a fun challenge for those who enjoy offroad rides.
